history

The Armed Forces of Qatar ( Arabic القوات المسلحة القطرية) Represent the 11,800 soldiers strong military of the emirate of Qatar . These are divided into Army (8500), Air Force (1500) and Navy (including maritime police) (1800).

The Qatari armed forces are participating in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon with three members .

Great Britain has four C-130 of the Royal Air Force stationed in Qatar. In addition, the USA operates a joint HBCT equipment store (APS) in Qatar for the Army , Air Force , Navy and Marines with 430 members.

Land Forces

The Qatari army ( Engl. : Qatar Emiri Land Forces , abbreviated QELF ) is the largest armed force with 8,500 soldiers, but the Qatari army suffers from staff shortages. Only 30% of the soldiers are native, while the rest come from 20 nations. The initially British equipment was supplemented in the 1980s with French equipment such as AMX-30 main battle tanks, VAB, AMX-10, Milan and Crotale-FlaRak. When the Qatari army refused to inspect the US-supplied FIM-92 "Stinger" in 1988, the US imposed an arms embargo until Operation Desert Storm in 1990.

In May 2009, the Federal Security Council of Germany approved a delivery of 36 Leopard 2 battle tanks and in summer 2009 a delivery of 24 of the Panzer Howitzer 2000 from Germany to Qatar. On April 18, 2013, the emirate signed a contract with Krauss-Maffei Wegmann for 24 PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers and 62 Leopard 2 battle tanks for the modernization of the army . Furthermore, in September 2014 the Federal Security Council approved the export of 13 Dingo wheeled armored vehicles and 32 Fennek- type reconnaissance tanks .

Naval forces

The Marine Qatar ( Engl. : Qatar Emiri Navy abbreviated QEN ) includes a staff strength of 1,800 personnel and operates from the ports of Doha and the island of Halul . The boat stock includes four French Combattante III type FK speed boats , four British VITA class FK speed boats, fourteen guard boats (eleven of which are used by the maritime police) and a landing craft that can carry three tanks and 110 soldiers.

modernization

In June 2016, the Navy ordered seven larger warships from Italian Fincantieri for four billion euros , which are to be built from 2018 and delivered by 2024. This includes four FK corvettes , which will have a length of over 100 meters and a displacement of 3000 ts and can therefore already be addressed as frigates . Two ocean patrol boats expected to be based on the Falaj-2 class and an amphibious support vessel based on the Kalaat Beni-Abbès built for Algeria .

Air Force

The Air Force acquired Mirage 2000 aircraft in France . In 2009, the emirate received two strategic C-17 Globemaster III transporters and four C-130J Hercules tactical transport aircraft followed in 2011 . In November 2009, the country received the first of 18 AgustaWestland AW139 helicopters ordered. So far, only twelve light SA-342L Gazelle combat and eight medium Westland WS.61 Commando transport helicopters have been operated. In June 2012 the intention to purchase twelve UH-60M Black Hawk and in July 2012 the purchase of 24 Pilatus PC-21s including simulators was announced. The first two PC-21s were delivered to the QEAF in early October 2014.

Calls

During the Syrian Civil War , the Qatar Air Force supported the USA in bombing positions of the terrorist organization "Islamic State" . Among other things, Qatar supplied the Franco-German anti-tank system MILAN to the Syrian opposition army.
