The The Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces ( Arabic القوات المسلحة لسلطان عمان, DMG al-Quwāt ul-Musallaḥatu lis-Sulṭān 'Umān ; German about Armed Forces of the Sultan of Oman ) is the army of the Sultanate of Oman . The commander-in-chief is Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taymur . There is no conscription in Oman . In December each year, Armed Forces Day is celebrated, which is to commemorate the final victory of the Sultan in 1975 over the insurgents in the south. The Ministry of Defense and the General Staff have had their headquarters in Muaskar al-Murtafa'a, near Seeb Airport , since 1978 . The Omani armed forces consist of the following three armed forces: The Royal Omani Army , the Royal Omani Air Force and the Royal Omani Navy .
Land Forces
The Royal Omani Army ( English : The Royal Army of Oman , abbreviated RAO ) consists of the arms of infantry , tanks and artillery . There are also the usual combat support troops. The infantry consists of the Muscat Regiment , the Northern Border Regiment, the Desert Regiment , the Mountain Regiment , the Omani Coast Regiment, the Southern Oman Regiment and the Western Border Regiment. There is also a parachute regiment and the special forces. In 1975 the originally irregular Firqat troops were integrated into the armed forces. The tank force is equipped with 38 modern Challenger 2 tanks. Army officers are trained at the Sultan Qaboos Military College .
artillery
The Sultan of Oman's Artillery (SOA) consists of four artillery regiments: three field regiments that are equipped with guns of different calibers (105 mm, 130 mm and 155 mm) and one anti-aircraft regiment that has Mistral anti-aircraft missiles and Skyguard anti-aircraft cannon systems to combat low-flying targets .
The SOA is headquartered in Izki , where the headquarters and artillery school are located. Two artillery field regiments are also stationed there. Another base with an artillery field regiment is in Salala . The main guns of the SOA are 24 South African Denel G6s with a 155 mm drawbar cannon and 39 British L118 Light Gun howitzers with a caliber of 105 mm. Since 2011, the Omani field artillery has been equipped with an artillery fire control system that supports all SOA field gun types. The training takes place in two training centers in Izki or Salala. In these training centers, all functions from the gun team to the brigade level are trained. The main focus is on the training of artillery observers , who can play through all scenarios on a simulator.
Naval forces
The Royal Omani Navy ( English : The Royal Navy of Oman , abbreviated RNO ) has a staff of 4,200 men and operates from the Said bin Sultan naval base in Widam A´Sahil on the Gulf of Oman . The most important task is to monitor the Strait of Hormuz , which is of outstanding importance due to the oil traffic passing through it, and to secure our own coastal waters.
The boat stock includes five corvettes, three of which belong to the modern Khareef class , four speedboats , seven patrol boats and five landing craft . Furthermore, a new sailing training ship , the Shabab Oman , was put into service a few years ago . The former landing craft Al Munassir was sunk in 2003 as an artificial reef southwest of Muscat. The National Hydrographic Office (NHO) assigned to this branch publishes nautical charts of Omani waters.
Air Force
Royal Omani Guard
The Royal Omani Guard (English. The Royal Guard of Oman , abbreviation RGO ) guards the Sultan of Oman. It is a special unit that is used for combat missions and representative missions. In 1981 it was reinforced from a regiment to a brigade and since then has consisted of four line regiments and one support regiment. It also has a riding department, a motorcycle department, a parachute show department and several military music bands (only women serve in one of the mounted bands). It also has the Royal Guard College.
Other facilities
Al-Khoudh is considered one of the best military hospitals in the region. There is also an interesting military museum in the former armed forces headquarters in Bait al-Falaj.
