On September 20, 1990, South Ossetia declared itself independent as a Soviet Democratic Republic. Georgian militias marched into the area while Soviet troops intervened on the South Ossetian side. In December 1990 a state of emergency was declared in South Ossetia. On September 1, 1991 the area was renamed the Republic of South Ossetia. On September 6, 1991 Georgia broke official relations with the Soviet Union under President Zviad Gamsakhurdia . On November 25, 1991, the Georgian Supreme Soviet lifted the state of emergency over South Ossetia and three days later South Ossetia declared itself independent again. South Ossetian militia units fought against Georgian troops until a peacekeeping force was deployed in 1992. Various peace plans did not bring about a solution to the conflict. The 2008 Caucasus War began with open fighting between soldiers of the Georgian army and South Ossetian militia units in July 2008. It escalated on the night of August 8, when Georgian forces launched an offensive to regain control of the entire region. As a result, Russian troops attacked from the North Caucasus , pushed the Georgian army back and advanced into the Georgian heartland. By the ceasefire on August 12, a total of around 850 people had been killed and between 2,500 and 3,000 people wounded. Russian troops are stationed in South Ossetia to this day and de facto control the area. In 2017, the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and the military chief of South Ossetia, Ibragim Gassejew, agreed to integrate the South Ossetian soldiers into the Russian army.
