The M706 is an American four-wheel reconnaissance tank .
The M706 Commando was originally developed by Cadillac Cage (now Textron Systems ) for export. When the first vehicles were mass-produced in 1964, the war in Vietnam was in full swing. The United States Army was looking for a vehicle suitable as a scout and escort vehicle. The M706 has proven itself in this area of application. The main tasks were protecting convoys, suppressing riots and fighting ambushes. Most of these vehicles were used by the South Vietnamese Army . The Jamaican Army still uses three vehicles of the type today.
The M706 is amphibious. In the water, it is driven by the wheels.
The upgraded version V-200 was sold to Singapore . Since the beginning of the 1970s, the M706 has been replaced by the V-150 and V-300.
Due to a US military embargo, Guatemala built its own version of the V-150 called Armadillo for its army . The chassis came from civilian trucks.
The M706 was further developed by Textron Systems in the 1990s to create the M1117 Guardian Armored Security Vehicle ; together these vehicles form the Commando family.
