The Type 96 ( Japanese 96 式 装 輪 装甲車 , 96-shiki sōrin sōkōsha , German "Type 96 armored car") is an eight-wheeled (8 × 8) all-wheel drive armored personnel carrier from Japanese production. The vehicle is not amphibious .

The 40mm Howa Type 96 grenade launcher

The Type 96 is the most modern armored vehicle in the service of the Japanese ground self-defense forces . Production started in 1995. 500 vehicles were ordered by the Japanese army. The type 96 has not yet been exported.

For a wheeled armored vehicle of this class, the Type 96 is armored at best medium-heavy. On the other hand, the low vehicle silhouette is advantageous. The armament consists of a 12.7 mm machine gun and a 40 mm grenade launcher . The crew consists of two men, the vehicle interior offers space for a further eight soldiers. The type 96 has a roof hatch and a rear door.
