VBTP-MR Guarani (Portuguese: V iatura B lindada T ransporte de P essoal - M édia de R odas ) is the name of a Brazilian armored vehicle .
Project history
The VBTP-MR was developed by the Italian vehicle manufacturer Iveco for the Brazilian Army and is currently in production. A total of 2044 vehicles are to be produced to replace the EE-11 Urutu from the 1970s. The VBTP is an amphibious, 16.7 ton 6 × 6 wheeled tank that can carry eleven soldiers. Several hundred of these vehicles are already in service in 2018. The Guarani is designed for transport by the C-130 Hercules or Embraer KC-390 transport aircraft.
Armament
The VBTP-MR can be equipped with a variety of remote controlled weapon stations for additional firepower. The model chosen by the Brazilian Army is the ORCWS UT-30BR from Elbit Systems , which includes a 30mm cannon with anti-tank missiles . Standard armament is the 30mm cannon, a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and smoke thrower, along with an all-round commander sight and a laser warning system . Elbit System's Brazilian subsidiary , Ares Aeroespacial e Defensa , announced a $ 25 million contract in October 2012 to supply its REMAX stabilized weapon stations to the Brazilian Army. This is the first production order that will be delivered from 2012 to 2014. REMAX was conceived as part of the VBTP program and is characterized by a simple and maintenance-friendly design. The manufacturer has been working on an 8 × 8 version with a 105 mm cannon since 2015 to replace the Brazilian Army's EE-9 Cascavel .
Exports
Iveco signed a contract to sell 80 vehicles to the Lebanese military and police in 2015 . The contract, valued at around 30 million euros, includes 25 light armored vehicles and six anti-mine armored vehicles to be manufactured in Italy, as well as ten VBTP-MR amphibious armored vehicles manufactured in Brazil.
