Barys ( Russian Барыс ) is the name of a Kazakh armored personnel carrier .

Project history

The Kazakh - South African joint venture "Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering" (KPE) presented the then new Barys 8 × 8 armored vehicle at the KADEX 2016 - Kazakhstan's defense fair. The joint venture will start production of the vehicles in the new 15,000 square meter assembly plant in the Kazakh capital Nur-Sultan (Astana by 2019) . KPE designed the system for a production volume of up to 200 vehicles per year, including 120 Barys. The difference shows that the aim is to export the vehicle. Kazakh media sources released reports that KPE also designed a 6 × 6 variant, which recently began assembly in Jordan .

Technology and armament

Bary's rear door

The prototype shown at KADEX is an armored 8 × 8 wheeled vehicle based on the Mbombe 8 × 8 wheeled armored vehicle from the South African manufacturer Paramount . With a total weight of 28 tons and a curb weight of 19 tons, the vehicle can transport up to nine tons of payload including weapon system, ammunition, crew and additional equipment.

The presented on the KADEX 2016 Barys was stabilized with the Russian AU-220M, remote tower with a newly designed 57-mm automatic cannon equipped. The AU-220M was developed by Burevestnik , a subsidiary of the Russian Uralwagonzavod Group . A 7.62 mm machine gun is mounted coaxially to the 57 mm cannon. The maximum range of the 57 mm cannon is 12 km. The rate of fire is 120 rounds per minute. The tower can be rotated 360 degrees in azimuth and from −5 to +75 degrees in height. The vehicle has protection against mine detonation in the middle under the vehicle and under the wheel with 10 kg TNT equivalent ( STANAG 4569 Level 4b) and ballistic protection (Level 3). It also has air conditioning and an aggregate.

The bary is powered by a six-cylinder diesel engine with 550 hp. Linked to this is an automatic transmission with six gears. Thus, a maximum speed of 110 km / h and a range of 800 km should be achieved.

According to Ben Jansen, CEO of Paramount's armored division, the new vehicle is part of a family of platforms with different wheel configurations 4 × 4, 6 × 6 and 8 × 8 that share over 80% of the assemblies to minimize production costs and improve training and simplify logistics. Literally stated Jansen: “This commonality relates to both the power packs and the fact that all three vehicles use a“ conventional ”or“ inline ”drivetrain configuration with the unit positioned at the front of the vehicle and along its centerline becomes."
