The TATA Kestrel is an Indian wheeled armored vehicle developed by DRDO .
Development history
As part of the Tata Group's corporate strategy to expand the scope of its defense business , Tata Motors presented the Kestrel (8 × 8) all-wheel-drive armored amphibious vehicle platform for the first time at Defexpo 2014. The vehicle was jointly developed by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and TATA developed. The Kestrel is the first amphibious infantry fighting vehicle developed in India and expectations are high that the Radpanzer in the Indian army is taken to there from the Soviet era coming BMP infantry fighting vehicles of the types BMP-1 and BMP-2 to replace .
Technology and armament
The weight of the Kestrel is 22.5 to 26 tons, depending on the configuration. It is powered by a 600 hp diesel engine that is supposed to accelerate the vehicle to a maximum of 100 km / h on the road. The customer should also be able to choose between different engine variants. The two front axles are steerable and give the vehicle a turning circle of 19 meters. A total of twelve people can be carried in the kestrel, ten soldiers and two crew members. The troop seats are equipped with a damping mechanism that protects the occupants from mine explosions. The seats are positioned in a back-to-back configuration so that there is the possibility of installing loopholes and opening flaps. The main armament of the Kestrel is installed in the turret, which - as previously announced - is equipped with a machine cannon and a coaxial machine gun. At DefExpo 2018 , the vehicle was shown with the remote-controlled turret UT30MK2 from Elbit Systems , which is armed with an M242 Bushmaster automatic cannon.
