The Saur 2 is an 8 × 8 armored personnel carrier from Romanian production, which was produced by the vehicle manufacturer Automecanica Moreni . The vehicle was developed by ROMARM in the early 2000s ; the previous model was named Saur 1 .

History of origin

The Saur 2 is a multipurpose armored vehicle developed by ROMARM in 2008. At the end of 2008 the first prototype was presented at the Expomil 2009 armaments fair. The Saur 2 is designed for 11 people: commander, driver, gunner and nine soldiers in the interior. The design is based on a modular structure that was chosen to offer maximum flexibility for multi-purpose operation, so the Saur 2 should be considered as a casualty transporter, command post, armored logistics vehicle, recovery vehicle and even as a 120 mm mortar carrier. The Saur 2 was developed to meet the new requirements of the Romanian army in various deployment scenarios in the context of NATO missions abroad. In terms of armor and driving performance , the Saur 2 represents a significant improvement compared to its predecessor, the Saur 1 .

The Saur 2 has an armored hull made of welded armor steel . The vehicle can accommodate 11 people, with the driver's seat on the front left in the fuselage and the drive unit on the right, the commander sitting behind the driver. Compared to the Saur 1, the Saur 2 has a more powerful 326 HP diesel engine that was purchased from MAN . In addition, the 8 × 8 vehicle is equipped with more resistant tires and new passenger seats that offer better protection in the event of mine detonations. In addition, the drive axles are built into the fuselage for protection. The Saur 2 has seven loopholes, four on the right and three on the left of the troop compartment. The vehicle is also equipped with a hydraulic winch that is mounted on the front of the vehicle.
