SIBMAS is the name of a military vehicle family of six-wheeled (6 × 6), all-wheel drive , amphibious armored vehicles from Belgium , which was developed in the 1970s and offered for export. The SIBMAS is only in service with the Malaysian Armed Forces .

history

The Belgian company BN Constructions Ferroviaries et Métalliques began developing the vehicle on its own initiative in 1975. The first prototype was completed in 1976. The vehicle was produced exclusively for export. The Malaysian army was the only customer to be won, which ordered a total of 186 units, which were delivered from June 1983 to the beginning of 1985 and are still in use there today.

technology

In the basic variant as a pure transport tank, a group of eleven soldiers can be transported in addition to the two-man crew. When installing a weapon turret, the strength of the seat is reduced. The soldiers can fight the fire through shooting hatches. Sitting down can be done through two doors on the sides and one at the rear. There are also several skylights above the transport area.

In the water, the amphibious vehicle is propelled by two screws at the stern.

Prototypes were fitted with a variety of turrets, including a 7.62mm twin machine gun , a 20mm machine gun, and a 90mm gun. In addition, versions as ambulance vehicles , command vehicles , anti- tank mortars and armored recovery vehicles were offered.

The SIBMAS AFSV-90 is equipped with a 90 mm cannon and serves as a fire support vehicle. The cannon is integrated into a two-man turret with the designation CM90 of the Belgian armaments company CMI , which also has one coaxial and one anti-aircraft machine gun of the type FN MAG in caliber 7.62x51mm. The fire control system is the LRS 5 from OIP Sensor Systems. In the rear of the vehicle there is space for a six-man crew.

The SIBMAS ARV is an armored recovery vehicle and has a crane system with a lifting force of 10,500 kg and a wire rope winch with a pulling force of 20,000 kg mounted on the front of the vehicle. This version does not transport a detachment team, but only has a two-person crew consisting of a driver and a commander, who simultaneously operate the vehicle's recovery equipment.

The Malaysian army sets the SIBMAS in four battalions , where they together with from Germany coming Condor-1 operate -Transportpanzern.
