The Automitrailleuse légère , or AML for short , (German: Leichter Panzerwagen ), made by Panhard, is a French all-wheel drive (4 × 4) armored car . It was developed in the 1960s and was subsequently exported to numerous countries. Based on the caliber of the main cannon, a distinction is essentially made between two vehicle variants - the AML 60 and the AML 90.
history
In the 1950s, the French army used the heavy eight - wheel EBR-75 alongside the British Ferret armored vehicle . It was decided in France to develop its own light armored car, which did not have the disadvantages of the aforementioned models. In 1956, the French government put out an order for the development of a vehicle with the dimensions of a Ferret for use in counterinsurgency operations in the existing and former French colonies. The manufacturer Panhard, who had relevant experience through the development and construction of the EBR-75, quickly developed the prototype 245 Auto Mitrailleuse légère (light armored car) by 1959 .
Production began as early as the 1960s. Since then, around 4,000 vehicles have rolled off the production line and have been exported to over 30 countries. In addition, around 1300 AML 60/90 were built under license in South Africa under the designation Eland 60/90 .
In addition, a Panhard M3 VTT armored personnel carrier was developed. The M3 and the AML consist of 95% of the same components. Thus, it is beneficial for states deployed to the AML to also purchase the transport armored vehicle in order to reduce overhead costs .
The main weapon of the AML is either a 90 mm cannon made by GIAT or a 60 mm mortar gun . The name of the tank is accordingly. The vehicle also has night vision equipment and a radio.
variants
In all versions of the AML, the driver sits in the center of the front part of the armored car, while the two-seat turret is on the hull. There is also one door on each side and the engine is installed in the rear of the vehicle.
