The TAB-63 is an 8 × 8 armored personnel carrier (original designation T ransportorul A mfibiu B lindat model 19 63 , German translation: Amphibious armored car model 1963) from Romanian production. The TAB-63 is essentially based on the Soviet BTR-60P .
History of origin
The Socialist Republic of Romania had been licensed to manufacture the Soviet BTR-60P under license since 1962 . In April 1963, the National Defense Council of the Socialist Republic of Romania finally decided to develop a prototype of an armored personnel carrier, which should be equipped as far as possible with Romanian vehicle components. These auto parts were installed in the fuselage of a Soviet BTR-60P in various factories in the domestic vehicle industry and the vehicle was then subjected to tests. Although the TAB-63 never went into series production, the experience gained during the development and assembly of this prototype was later used for the production of the TAB-71 .
technology
The TAB-63 prototype was equipped with two gasoline engines of the type SR-213 , two vehicle transmission , two propeller shafts , two drive shafts , brakes , hydraulic pumps , electrical systems, a central tire inflation system provided and a number of other components from the Romanian production.
The TAB-63 was driven over 15,000 kilometers on a military test site, the amphibian suitability was tested for 26 hours. At the end of the tests, the military vehicle engineers stated that the TAB-63, provided it was equipped with the optimal transmission, had the same mobility as the BTR-60P.
