The BPM-97 , designated by the manufacturer as KAMAZ-43269 , is a Russian armored car with light armor. The vehicle is intended for various uses, including patrol and scouting missions. The vehicle is based on the chassis of the KamAZ-4326 truck .

history

Development began in 1997 at the Moscow State Technical University together with KAMAZ . Initially, the project was offered to all law enforcement agencies and the military of the Russian Federation. The head of the border troops of Russia was the first to notice the BPM-97. The BPM-97 was viewed as a partial replacement for the GAZ-66 , in order to ensure the safe transport of the border guards even in inaccessible places on the border. After the Russian crisis, state financial support for the project ended, which is why the work dragged on. In 1999, a prototype of the armored car was presented to the general public.

To compensate for the financial expenses for the project, despite a small order from the state, the armored car was offered for commercial private companies. Therefore, some BPM-97s were and are used for the transport of money, the transport of explosives and other valuable or dangerous goods.

After the approval to export the BPM-97 was obtained in 2005, some armored vehicles were sold to Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. During the delivery, some critical defects became known which led to the cancellation of already ordered BPM-97s. The defects manifested themselves in defective cardan shafts, shock absorbers and cracks in armor plates. Even so, in 2008 the Russian Defense Ministry decided to buy the copies that had already been built. In 2009 some BPM-97 took part in the “Sapad-2009” maneuver.

construction

An all-wheel drive armored car with a load-bearing welded body was provided for in the construction. The BPM-97 is divided into two compartments, one for the engine components and the other for the crew. The armored car has side and rear doors and two upper hatches for the driver and the shooter. During the development, units of the KAMAZ-4326 were used, which made the production processes much easier and significantly increased the ease of repair. This also led to a reduction in manufacturing costs and maintenance could be carried out by the manufacturer KAMAZ. The engine could cover 270,000 km without maintenance.

The BPM-97 has two 125-liter fuel tanks and a 20-liter tank in the cabin. The armored car has, among other things, an autonomous heater, which maintains the temperature for the crew in the cabin regardless of the engine temperature. Furthermore, an air filter system for the cabin is built into the armored car.

Armor and armament

The armor can withstand a maximum of machine gun fire. The upper armor can withstand projectiles from a 12.7 mm NSW machine gun from a distance of 300 m, the lower parts of the car that of a 7.62 mm Dragunov sniper rifle from a distance of 30 m. The floor is also armored. The armament is mounted on the rotating turret and consists of a 30 mm AGS-17 Plamja grenade launcher as standard .

It is possible to install an MB2 module consisting of a 30 mm machine gun. The weight does not increase over 12 tons.
