Production of the KamAZ-65224 began a little later than other variants of the vehicle family in 2005. The vehicle, which is also built for military purposes, is located well above the KamAZ-5350 and is intended to transport heavy special bodies.

As of mid-2016, the vehicle will be equipped ex works with a diesel engine manufactured in-house by KAMAZ. The engine with a displacement of almost twelve liters has an output of 400 hp (294 kW) and a maximum torque of around 1800 Nm. The eight-speed manual transmission is supplied by the German company ZF Friedrichshafen . With a rear-mounted gearbox , 16 gears are available.
