Fire engine AZ-2,0-40 based on the KamAZ-4308 (2012)

Due to the sharp decline in production of one of the largest Soviet truck manufacturers, the Zavod imeni Lichatschowa , after the collapse of the Soviet Union , a gap in the market for medium-duty trucks opened up. The Minski Awtomobilny Sawod responded first and launched the MAZ-4370 in the late 1990s. In 2003, KAMAZ introduced the KamAZ-4308 in response.

Series production began the following year. By 2008 the production numbers rose to around 1000 vehicles per year, and in 2009 sales collapsed due to the financial crisis. The following table shows the number of trucks built between 2004 and 2010.

During the construction period, various diesel engines with outputs between 140 and 242 hp were installed. The engines came from KAMAZ's in-house production as well as from US suppliers such as Caterpillar and Cummins Engine . As of 2016, only engines from Cummins are being installed, plus transmissions from ZF Friedrichshafen bought in Germany . In the past, transmissions built by KAMAZ were also installed in the vehicles. The manufacturer also offers the vehicle in different lengths.
