Series production of the KamAZ-55102 began as early as 1980. It is technically based on the models KamAZ-5320 (flatbed truck) and KamAZ-5511 (construction tipper). In particular, it takes over the longer wheelbase of the flatbed truck. The engine and transmission are the same in all three vehicles. A five-speed manual transmission from KamAZ's own production is used, and KamAZ also manufactured the engine itself. The basic version of the KamAZ-740.10 diesel engine developed 210 HP (154 kW), later engines with up to 240 HP (176 kW) were installed.

The most important change compared to the design as a construction tipper was the dump body used. It can be emptied on both sides, but not to the rear. In addition, the shape completely changed. The loading area is rectangular with a flat bottom, not as a trough. In the basic version it holds almost eight cubic meters of material, but can be expanded to over 15 cubic meters with additional attachments. However, the truck can only load seven tons, significantly less than the KamAZ-5511. The vehicle is designed for agriculture, where there are very voluminous bulk goods that are not particularly heavy or dense.

It is not exactly clear when the KamAZ model was discontinued. The KamAZ-5511, the version as a construction tipper, was manufactured until 1990. With the KamAZ-45143 there is a very similar successor that is still manufactured by KamAZ today. It complies with current environmental regulations, has a larger payload and is more powerful.
