The KamAZ-43118 was developed in the mid-1990s as a heavier version of the KamAZ-43114 and was initially designed for a payload of ten tons. As with other models from the manufacturer from this period, a five-speed manual transmission with additional off-road reduction was installed. The large-volume V8 diesel engine of the KamAZ-740 type, manufactured in-house, initially developed 260 hp (191 kW) with a displacement of 10.85 liters. The wheelbase has been lengthened by 335 millimeters compared to its predecessor. In addition, two different flatbeds with lengths of 6.2 and 5.1 meters respectively were offered. In the version with a short loading area, the spare wheel is located behind the cab, in the versions with a long loading area under the vehicle.
Vehicles from the current production (2016) have an engine that comes with a larger stroke to a displacement of 11.76 liters. The turbo-charged diesel engine complies with the EURO-4 emissions standard and has an output of 300 hp (221 kW), which enables the train to have a gross vehicle weight of more than 33 tonnes when towing a trailer. The installed transmissions no longer come from our own production, but are supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen. In addition, the cab has been visually redesigned. The truck still has permanent all-wheel drive , large individual tires with a coarse profile and a large ground clearance to ensure the necessary off-road mobility. The payload was increased by a little more than a ton.
Model variants
In the course of the production period, which has now lasted more than 20 years, different versions of the KamAZ-43118 were built in series. The following list does not claim to be complete.
- KamAZ-43118 - basic version, built since 1995
- KamAZ-44108 - all-wheel drive tractor unit based on the KamAZ-43118
- KamAZ-45141 - all-wheel drive dump truck on the chassis of the KamAZ-43118
- KS-5579 - all -terrain mobile crane with a lifting capacity of 25 tons based on the KamAZ-43118
- ATZ-56142-010-35 - all -terrain fuel transporter (tank truck)
- AZ-7-40 - Fire engine
- AZ-8-40 (43118) - Fire engine with double cab

Based on the KamAZ-43118, the KamAZ-4355 was designed in 2003 and a prototype was also built. It is a long-nosed truck with a completely modified cabin and a possible payload of ten tons. In 2004 a few more prototypes were built, including crane vehicles. However, there was never any series production.
