Spirit Lake ( Santee / Dakota : Mni Wakan Oyate) is a Dakota - Sioux Indian tribe recognized by the American federal government and the name of an Indian reservation in North Dakota .

The reserve is 1,283.77 km² and includes parts of Benson County , Eddy County , Ramsey County , Wells County and Nelson County . According to a 2010 census, the reserve had 4,435 permanent residents. According to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), the tribe has 6,700 registered members, 4,500 of whom live on the reservation. The reserve is on the south bank of Devils Lake in North Dakota.

The reserve has made headlines several times due to the devastating floods caused by the lake. The reserve administration is located in Fort Totten . The BIA also operates a base there.
