Benson County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Minnewaukan .

The county is located in the northeast of North Dakota and has an area of 3728 square kilometers, of which 152 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Towner County , Ramsey County , Nelson County , Eddy County , Wells County, and Pierce Counties .
history
Benson County was formed in 1883. It was named after Bertil W. Benson , an early politician in the Dakota Territory.
Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 19, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Benson County had 6,964 people in 2,328 households and 1,701 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 50.85 percent white, 0.00 percent African American, 48.05 percent Native American, 0.01 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.79 percent of the population.
Of the 2,328 households, 38.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 48.5 percent were married couples living together, 16.6 percent were single mothers, 26.9 percent were non-families, 24.5 percent were single households and 12.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.97 and the average family size was 3.48 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 36.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 19.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 102.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 102.0 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 26,688 , and the median income for a family was $ 31,558. Males had a median income of $ 23,056 versus $ 17,862 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,509. 24.4 percent of families and 29.1 percent families lived below the poverty line. Of these, 38.9 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 16.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
