Ransom County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Lisbon .

The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of North Dakota and has an area of ​​2238 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cass County , Richland County , Sargent County , Dickey County , LaMoure County, and Barnes County .

history

Ransom County was formed in 1873. It was named after the nearby Fort Ransom .

Nine buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 1, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Ransom County's 5,890 people were living in 2,350 households and 1,560 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.93 percent white, 0.19 percent African American, 0.32 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.93 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.81 percent of the population.

Of the 2,350 households, 31.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.1 percent were married couples living together, 5.1 percent were single mothers, 33.6 percent were non-families, 30.7 percent were single households, and 15.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.01.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 5.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 21.2 percent were 65 years of age or over.
