The county is located slightly south in the far west of North Dakota, borders Montana and has an area of ​​2596 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: McKenzie County , Billings County , Slope County , Fallon County, Montana, and Wibaux County, Montana.

Golden Valley County was formed in 1912. It was named after the area of ​​the Golden Valley in the same county.

As of the 2000 census , the Golden Valley County had 1,924 people in 761 households and 506 families. The population density was 0.74 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.77 percent white, 0.73 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.09 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.04 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.01.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 21.3 percent were 65 years of age or over.
