The Burke County is a county in the state of North Dakota of the United States . The county seat is Bowbells .

The county is located in the northwest of North Dakota, borders Canada in the north and has an area of ​​2925 square kilometers, of which 67 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in the United States in a clockwise direction: Renville County , Ward County , Mountrail County , Williams County, and Divide County .

history

Burke County was formed in 1910. It was named after John Burke , an early lawyer, political leader of the Dakota Territory, governor of North Dakota, US Treasury Secretary, and presiding judge of the North Dakota Supreme Court.

The Portal State Bank (2008) is one of three entries for the county on the National Register of Historic Places.

Three of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 20, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Burke County had 2,242 people in 1,013 households and 680 families. The population density was 0.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.24 percent white, 0.13 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian and 0.04 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.22 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.36 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
