The McKenzie County is a county in the state of North Dakota of the United States . The county seat is Watford City .

The county is located in western North Dakota, bordering Montana and has an area of ​​7410 square kilometers, of which 308 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Williams County , Mountrail County , Dunn County , Billings County , Golden Valley County , Wibaux County, Montana, and Richland County, Montana.

McKenzie County was formed in 1905. It was named after Alexander McKenzie a political leader in North Dakota.

In the county is a National Historic Site , the Fort Union Trading Post , which also has the status of a National Historic Landmark . Three of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 18, 2018).

McKenzie County's population was 5,737 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 61 lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,151 households and 1,548 families.
