The McKenzie County is a county in the state of North Dakota of the United States . The county seat is Watford City .

The county is located in western North Dakota, bordering Montana and has an area of 7410 square kilometers, of which 308 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Williams County , Mountrail County , Dunn County , Billings County , Golden Valley County , Wibaux County, Montana, and Richland County, Montana.

history

McKenzie County was formed in 1905. It was named after Alexander McKenzie a political leader in North Dakota.

The Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site (2009)

In the county is a National Historic Site , the Fort Union Trading Post , which also has the status of a National Historic Landmark . Three of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 18, 2018).

McKenzie County's population was 5,737 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 61 lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,151 households and 1,548 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.36 percent white, 0.07 percent African American, 21.18 percent Native American, 0.05 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.19 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.01 percent of the population.

Of the 2,151 households, 34.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.9 percent were married couples living together, 9.3 percent were single mothers, 28.0 percent were non-families, 25.8 percent were single households and 13.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.17.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 30.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 100.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 98.9 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,342 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,091. Males had a median income of $ 26,351 versus $ 20,147 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,732. 13.7 percent of families and 17.2 percent families lived below the poverty line. Of these, 22.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
