Pembina River

The county is located in the far northeast of North Dakota. It is traversed by the Pembina River , a left tributary of the Red River of the North that forms the border with Minnesota . The county borders Canada to the north . It has an area of ​​2,905 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water.

history

Pembina County was formed in 1867. It was named after anepeminan sipi , the Ojibwe word for cranberries , which are common in the region along the rivers. The seat of the administration was in Pembina until 1911 when it was moved to Cavalier .

Ten structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 29, 2018).
