The Pembina River is a left-hand tributary of the Red River of the North and flows through the south of Manitoba in Canada and the northeast of North Dakota in the United States for a length of 443 kilometers .
It drains an area of the prairie along the border between Canada and the United States . Via the Red River, into which the Pembina River flows at Pembina , its water reaches the Winnipegsee and the Nelson River . Thus, the Pembina River belongs to the Hudson Bay catchment area .
The river rises in several streams on the east side of the Turtle Mountains on both sides of the international border , which converge at Neelin and then runs initially to the northeast and later to the southeast, along the west side of the Pembina Hills . The river then flows into Cavalier County in northeast North Dakota. It flows eastwards immediately south of the border and passes Walhalla and Neche . The right tributary Tongue River flows about 3 kilometers upstream from the confluence of the Pembina River into the Red River of the North from the south.
