The McHenry County is a county in the state of North Dakota of the United States . The county seat is Towner .

The county is located in northern North Dakota, about 50 km from the border with Canada and has an area of ​​4951 square kilometers, of which 97 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Bottineau County , Pierce County , Sheridan County , McLean County , Ward County, and Renville Counties .

history

McHenry County was formed on January 4, 1873. It was named after James McHenry , an early settler in the southern Dakota Territory and a member of its legislative assembly in 1865. The county was finally organized on October 15, 1884.

Twelve buildings and sites in the county are listed in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 28, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , McHenry County's 5,987 people lived in 2,526 households and 1,699 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.73 percent white, 0.08 percent African American, 0.40 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian and 0.05 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.70 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.40 percent of the population.

Of the 2,526 households, 28.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.2 percent were married couples living together, 5.6 percent were single mothers, 32.7 percent were non-families, 29.8 percent were single households and 15.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.92 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 21.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 103.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 101.0 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 27,274 , and the median income for a family was $ 35,676. Males had a median income of $ 25,740 versus $ 18,505 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,140. 12.0 percent of families and 15.8 percent families lived below the poverty line. Of these, 18.5 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 16.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
