The Bowman County is a county in the state of North Dakota of the United States . The county seat is Bowman .

The county is located in the extreme southwest of North Dakota, borders South Dakota to the south and Montana to the west and has an area of ​​3,022 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Slope County , Adams County , Harding County, South Dakota, and Carter County, Montana.

Bowman County was formed in 1883 and dissolved in 1896. On May 24, 1901, the county was re-established and its organization completed on July 5, 1907. It was named after Edward M. Bowman , an early Dakota Territory politician and legislator.

Two places in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 20, 2018), Fort Dilts and the Emma Petznick and Otto Schade House .

According to the 2000 census , Bowman County had 3,242 people in 1,358 households and 890 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.98 percent white, 0.03 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.65 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.68 percent of the population.
