The Carter County is a county in the state of Montana to the United States . The county seat is Ekalaka . The county was named after Thomas Henry Carter , a US Senator for Montana.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 13,150 people. There were 5,430 households and 3,820 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.60% White, 0.07% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 0.29% other races Groups; 0.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.59% of the population.

Of the 5,430 households, 30.60% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.60% were married couples living together, 7.00% were single mothers. 29.50% were not families. 27.10% were single households and 14.90% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.99 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.50% residents under 18 years of age, 4.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.90% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 17.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 94.80 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 96.70 males.
