Lewis and Clark County is a county in the state of Montana in the United States . The county seat is in Helena .

history

The county was named after the explorers Lewis and Clark . On August 5, 1949, thirteen men from a fire jump unit died in Mann Gulch in the county. The American author Norman Maclean describes the incident in his book '' Junge Männer im Feuer '' ( Young Men in Fire ) (1994), on which the American organizational psychologist Karl E. Weick based one of the most famous presentations of the sensemaking concept.

As of the 2000 census , the county had 55,716 people. There were 22,850 households and 14,966 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.21% White, 0.20% African American, 2.04% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 0.38% other races Groups; 1.61% were from two or more races. 1.51% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 22,850 households, 32.20% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.40% were married couples living together, 9.20% were single mothers. 34.50% were not families. 29.10% were single households and 8.90% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.95.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.60% of residents under 18 years of age, 8.50% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.90% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.20% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.70% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,360 , and the median income for a family is $ 46,766. Males had a median income of $ 33,515 versus $ 23,961 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,763. 10.90% of the population and 7.30% of families are below the poverty line. 12.60% of them were under 18 years of age and 6.50% were 65 years of age or older.
