McCone County is a county in the state of Montana in the United States . The county seat is in Circle .

The county had 1,977 people as of the 2000 census . There were 810 households and 596 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.97% White, 0.30% African American, 1.06% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 0.00% other races Groups; 1.37% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.96% of the population.

Of the 810 households, 30.20% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 66.90% were married couples living together, 3.80% were single mothers. 26.30% were not families. 24.60% were single households and 11.40% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.89 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.80% of residents under the age of 18, 5.40% between the ages of 18 and 24, 24.30% between the ages of 25 and 44, and 26.50% between the ages of 45 and 64 18.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 99.70 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 103.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,718 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,887. Males had a median income of $ 22,768 versus $ 15,368 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,162. 16.80% of the population and 14.10% of families are below the poverty line. 19.40% of them were under 18 years of age and 11.20% were 65 years of age or older.
