Lake County is a county in the northwest of the state of Montana in the United States . The county seat is located in the Lake County Court House in Polson . Most of the county area overlaps with the Flathead Indian Reservation .
geography
Lake County has a total area of 1,654 square miles (approximately 4284 km²), of which 1,490 mi² (approximately 3859 km²) is land and 164 mi² (approximately 425 km²) is covered by water. The county is bordered by Flathead County to the north, Missoula County to the south, and Sanders County to the west .
In the east of the county runs the Mission Mountain Range , part of the Rocky Mountains . In the north is the eponymous Flathead Lake , the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States.
The Flathead River drains to the west.

Lake was spun off from Missoula County and Flathead Counties in 1923 and established as a separate county.

Lake County is the ninth largest county in Montana by population. The US Census Bureau estimated the population in 2014 at 29,099. The median annual household income was $ 38,268 in 2012.
Average life expectancy for "white" women in Lake County is 82 years for white men, 78 years, compared to 65 years for Native American women and 59.5 years for Native American men.
The county had a population of 26,507 as of the 2000 census . There were 10,192 households and 7,215 families. The population density was seven people per square kilometer. The population was composed of 71.38% White, 0.12% African American, 23.79% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 0.67% from other races; 3.70% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.52% of the population.
33% of the 10,192 households had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.8% were married couples living together, 11.5% were single mothers. 29.2% were not families. 24.5% were single households and 9.9% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.02.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.1% of residents under the age of 18, 8% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.5% between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.9% between 45 and 64 years of age, and 14 , 50% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.1 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,740 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,033. Males had a median income of $ 27,009 versus $ 19,162 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,173. 18.7% of the population and 14% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 24.2% of those affected were under 18 years of age and 8.3% were 65 years of age or older.

Cinema and theater
There are cinemas in Polson and Ronan .
The Port Polson Theater is a log house built in 1938 and operated by an amateur group founded in 1976.
Museums
The Miracle of America, a nonprofit American history museum in Polson, was founded in 1981. The Polson-Flathead Historical Museum is organized on a voluntary basis and exhibits memorabilia predominantly related to local history.
The Flathead Indian Museum in St. Ignatius shows objects from the time of the " Wild West " and the beginnings of the establishment of the reservation.
Buildings
The Church of St. Ignatius Mission was built in 1854 by Indians under the guidance of Catholic missionaries in the town of St. Ignatius. She is known for her historical murals .
In addition to the St. Ignatius Mission, nine other buildings and sites in the county are listed in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 8, 2018).
Parks
Lake County is home to Flathead Lake State Park , to which Wild Horse Island belongs, and the park facilities Finley Point , Yellow Bay , Big Arm , Wayfarers and West Shore, which are distributed around the southern part of the lake .
Natural monuments
The National Bison Range, established in 1908, is located in the south of the county near Ravalli and Moiese . A herd of around 500 bison currently lives on an area of around 20,000 acres (almost 81 km²) . Elk and white-tailed deer , bighorn sheep and pronghorns also live here .
Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge and State Wildlife Management Area near Charlo south of Ronan is a water and bird sanctuary. It is managed as part of the National Bison Range by the state Fish and Wildlife Service ; the tribes manage the fish stocks.
Economy and Infrastructure
The county's largest employment sector is agriculture and forestry, followed by mining and construction. Tourism forms an important source of income in summer with offers for water, horse and hiking sports, gastronomy and accommodation.
The largest private employer (by number of employees) is the St. Luke Hospital in Ronan, followed by Providence St. Joseph in Polson, the drill maker Jore Corporation and the non-profit Mission Mountain Enterprise (MME) for the mentally disabled as well the supermarket chains Walmart and Super 1 Foods .
The Séliš Ksanka Ql'ispé Dam (formerly Kerr Dam ) hydroelectric dam, which was commissioned in 1938, was owned and operated by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes in 2015 . It is the first Indian-owned hydroelectric dam and produces around 1.1 million megawatt hours of electricity annually.
traffic
US Highway 93 runs north to south through the county. On the south shore of Flathead Lake, US Highway 35 branches off in Polson and leads along the east side of the lake to Finley Point and Woods Bay.
With government subsidies, the Indian Authority operates human resources and development ( Department of Human Resources and Development , DHRD) the public transport project Flathead Transit : In 2013, the project targeted the set, daily bus service along Highway 93 on the route between Whitefish and Missoula again a. In addition, Flathead Transit offers taxi-like, significantly discounted passenger transport within the reserve area. Both transportation programs can be used by Indians and non-Indians alike.
