The county had 3,609 people as of the 2000 census . There were 1,476 households and 987 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.98% White, 0.06% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 0.75% other races Groups; 1.30% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.50% of the population.
Of the 1,476 households, 30.80% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.00% were married couples living together, 4.50% were single mothers. 33.10% were not families. 28.90% were single households and 14.20% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.00% residents under 18 years of age, 5.30% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.70% between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.40% between 45 and 64 years of age 17.60% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 99.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,422 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,750. Males had a median income of $ 28,385 versus $ 17,245 for females.
