The Melville Lutheran Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church building in Melville ( Sweet Grass County ) in the US state of Montana . It belongs to the oldest Lutheran church in Montana.

history

Around 1880, Lutheran immigrants from Norway , who had settled on the fertile grassland upstream of the Crazy Mountains , began to hold house services. In October, the Norwegian Augustana Synod sent pastor Peter I. Reinertson to set up a church organization. The Lutheran congregation was formally formed on October 26, 1885, and Pastor Reinertson consecrated the cemetery on November 8. Services were celebrated in the local school building.

A first parish priest was appointed in September 1886, but he left the parish in December 1887 because of the seclusion. In the following parish vacancy, Rev. Nordby from Sims , North Dakota took care of the parish every spring from 1887 to 1889 . In 1895 they built their own rectory. Since 1910, the parish had been associated with the Big Timber Lutheran congregation under the direction of a pastor . The rectory in Melville was no longer needed and sold. The sales proceeds were used to start building our own church. The church was consecrated on November 29, 1914. In 1967/68 the parish rooms were added south of the nave.

Together with Big Timber, the Lutherans Melvilles form the Peaks of Glory Lutheran Parish , which is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America .
