The place Big Timber is located in Sweet Grass County , in the US state of Montana and has 1650 inhabitants (2000). Big Timber is conveniently located on major Interstate 90 , halfway between the cities of Billings and Bozeman . The place is the county seat of Sweet Grass County.
The place was originally founded by members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition under the name Rivers Across , as the Boulder River flows into the Yellowstone River here . The current name Big Timber was chosen because of the many large Cottonwood Trees ( poplars ) in the area. The place also has a certain tourist importance, since the Yellowstone National Park (approx. 80 km south) can be easily reached from there.
