The Ancona airport ( Italian Aeroporto delle Marche , IATA code : AOI , ICAO code : LIPY ) is an Italian airport 12km west of Ancona . It is the only international commercial airport in the Marche region . It is of importance u. a. also because of the Marian pilgrimage site in Loreto .

Location and connection

The airport is located near the Adriatic coast in the municipality of Falconara Marittima near the town of Castelferretti. Immediately to the west of the airport is the Adriatic A14 motorway , and to the east is Strada Statale 16 Adriatica . Cities a little further away on the Adriatic can be easily reached via the A14, via the SS 16 coastal towns in the vicinity and the city center with the port of Ancona. Directly at the airport branches off from the SS 16 to the autobahn-like road SS 76, which leads to Umbria and via Strada Statale 3 Via Flaminia to Rome . Along the coast, in addition to the SS 16, there is also the Bologna – Ancona line , from which the line to Rome branches off at Falconara. On the latter route, the Castelferretti train station is located directly in front of the airport terminal . From here you can not only reach the main train station Ancona by train, but also a number of other places in central Italy . There are also bus routes from the airport to the city center and along the coast to Ascoli Piceno .

Airlines and Destinations

The most important local airlines are Alitalia , Lufthansa with its subsidiaries Lufthansa Cityline and Air Dolomiti , and Ryanair . Ryanair connects Ancona with Brussels , London , Trapani in Sicily and Weeze , Lufthansa with Munich and Alitalia with Rome . There is also a connection to Catania with Volotea and several flights to Tirana in Albania.

history

Commercial air traffic, which emerged in Italy in the 1920s, was initially handled primarily by flying boats . Separate handling facilities were built for these in the port of Ancona in 1924. In addition to flights to Venice and Trieste , there was also a daily connection with today's Croatian Zadar from 1928 to 1943 .

South of Ancona there was a military airfield in Aspio near Camerano since 1916 , which was also used for civil purposes after the First World War . After Pope Benedict XV. In 1920 the Madonna of Loreto declared the patron saint of aviation , an airfield was built there in 1923, which replaced the too small airfield of Aspio. From 1929 to 1931 Loreto was a stopover on the Transadriatica scheduled flights between Venice and Brindisi . This airfield was also regarded as inadequate for Ancona's needs.

As early as 1929, the province of Ancona had requested the construction of a suitable airfield near Ancona. That year the Ministry of Aviation selected Falconara as the location for this project and immediately set up an airfield there. The airport was officially inaugurated on October 30, 1932, but the expansion work continued until 1934. In 1935 the Ala Littoria began its scheduled flights to and from Rome. In 1936 a military flight school was established in Falconara . During the Second World War , the airfield was only used for military purposes from 1940, until 1943 mainly for training purposes, and then by the Western Allies until 1945 .

After the war damage had been repaired, the airfield was to be used for civil aviation again. The new Transadriatica soon had to discontinue its scheduled flights on the Venice-Ancona-Brindisi-Catania route due to a lack of success. The Ancona Aeroclub did not start operating again until 1949. In the mid-1950s, NATO decided to expand it again for military purposes. The expansion work, which was not followed by the permanent stationing of airborne units, hindered the resumption of commercial air traffic in Ancona. Scheduled flights to Rome and Milan were only started in 1963, and then to Venice and Bari the following year . Thanks to the initiatives of the surrounding municipalities and tourist associations , the construction of a suitable passenger terminal began in 1965 . The province, various municipalities and associations founded the Aerdorica operating company in 1968 , which initiated an expansion of the airport. In 1977, Castelferretti began building a new terminal, which was inaugurated on July 16, 1981. Comprehensive modernization work ended in June 2004 with the inauguration of the new “Rafaello Sanzio” terminal, planned by the Hamburg architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners . The small freight terminal was also expanded.

Ancona-Sarajevo airlift

During the Bosnian war there was an international airlift between Ancona and Sarajevo . During the siege of Sarajevo from July 4, 1992 to January 9, 1996 hundreds of thousands of trapped people were cared for by air. From April 8 to September 15, 1995, the flights had to be suspended for safety reasons.
