The Lampedusa Airport ( Italian Aeroporto di Lampedusa , IATA code : LMP , ICAO code : LICD ) is an Italian commercial airport on between Sicily and North Africa located Mediterranean island of Lampedusa . It is located in the southeast of the island and borders directly on the main town of Lampedusa and its port .

Infrastructure and use

The airport has a 1,800 meter long runway that runs in an east-west direction (08/26). There is no taxiway running parallel to the runway . On the apron to the north of the railway is the old passenger terminal to the west and the new passenger terminal to the east, at which around 200,000 passengers are handled annually. There are regular connections to Sicily, Rome and Milan . In the summer months there is increased charter traffic from northern Italy. In addition, general aviation is handled.

The Italian Air Force has been operating a weather station and telecommunications systems on the island since 1958 and a radar station since 1983 . Therefore, there is a small military area northeast of the airport site.

history

The poor transport connections in Lampedusa led to complaints and protests in the 1950s and 1960s. The inhabitants of the island eventually forced the construction of the small airport by elections boycotted. The airport was opened in 1968 and operated directly by the civil aviation authority ENAC until 2015 , and since then by the operating company AST Aeroservizi. In 2012, the new terminal and the extended apron went into operation east of the original handling area.
