The Venice Airport ( IATA : VCE , ICAO : LIPZ ; ital. Aeroporto di Venezia-Tessera "Marco Polo" ) is the international passenger airport of the Italian city of Venice . It was named after the long-distance dealer Marco Polo and handles around eleven million passengers a year.

In the greater Venice area there is also the Treviso airport, which is mainly used by low-cost airlines , and the Venice-Lido airport for general aviation .

Location and transport links

The airport is located on the Terraferma Veneto , directly on the Venice lagoon , near the town of Tessèra and the island of the same name , around eight kilometers as the crow flies from Mestre in the west and Venice in the southwest.

The connection between the airport and the city is ensured by buses, taxis, motor boats or water buses. Bus connections between Piazzale Roma in Venice and Marco Polo Airport take place via bus line ACTV No. 5 (yellow bus, city line), or ATVO (blue bus, private). Taxis are available at the airport. It is also possible to take the waterbus from the airport to Fondamenta Nuove , St. Mark's Square or Venezia Santa Lucia train station . The airport's boat harbor is located immediately southwest of the passenger terminal.

history

Terminal of the airport

In the 1920s and 1930s in Italy, flying boats were predominantly used in civil service , which could be used optimally in the Venice lagoon.

Today's Venice-Lido airport was the first commercial airport in Venice for conventional land planes. It was established as a military airfield at the end of 1915 and opened for civilian air traffic in 1926. From the airport on the Lido there were scheduled flights to Vienna , Munich and on to Berlin . After the renewed military use during the Second World War , the civil service was resumed in 1947. The airfield quickly reached its limits with the introduction of larger commercial aircraft. After some airlines decided to switch to Treviso airport in 1952 , despite considerable opposition, the decision was made not to expand the airport on the Lido and instead to build a new airport near Tessera on the mainland. For this purpose, an extensive, 1500 hectare barena was concreted. The new airport was inaugurated in 1960.

The current terminal went into operation in 2002.

Airlines and Destinations

From Venice Airport, Italian and European city destinations are primarily served in point-to-point traffic , including London and Madrid . Despite its proximity to Treviso Airport, it is also used by low-cost airlines such as easyJet .

In the German-speaking area, Basel , Berlin , Düsseldorf , Frankfurt , Hamburg , Cologne-Bonn , Munich and Stuttgart as well as Vienna and Zurich are served. Long-haul connections exist to the United States , the United Arab Emirates , Canada and South Korea . UPS Airlines operates a cargo flight to Cologne / Bonn several times a week .

In addition, charter flights are carried out seasonally to and from Venice . In addition, the airport is served by business aircraft and sport aircraft.

Expansion plans

The airport operator SAVE and the regional government of Veneto want to gradually expand the airport and thereby further strengthen its leading role in northeast Italy. The airport is to be connected not only to the regional S-Bahn network Sistema Ferroviario Metropolitano Regionale , but also to the high-speed network of the Italian railways . Another runway , running parallel to the existing runways, is planned north of the current airport site. The terminal located between the slopes is to be expanded in a north-westerly direction and the apron in a north-westerly direction. If necessary, satellite terminals based on the model of Atlanta Airport could be built on the extended apron. The passenger capacity targeted by the expansion plans would then more than double to 19 million per year
