The Autostrada A57 ( Italian for 'Autobahn A57'), also Tangenziale di Mestre (Tangente von Mestre) is an Italian motorway in the northeast of the country . The term “tangential” implies that the city is “touched”, much like a tangent touches a circle; Mestre is a district of Venice . There are several interchanges on this bypass, including a. to the airport and the A27 (Mestre– Belluno ).

The A57 was created in 2009 when the new bypass of the A4 ( Passante di Mestre ) was opened. The route branches off from the A4 at Mira and heads east through Mestre to Quarto d'Altino , where it reunites with the A4.

    history

The route of the A57 was opened to traffic in three phases:

    • The section between the western junction with the A4 and the Venezia ovest tollbooth was opened on November 15, 1933. This section is part of the Padua - Venice route, which was built as one of the first motorway routes in Italy.
    • The section between the junction with the A27 and the Venezia est tollbooth was opened as part of the A4 Venice- Trieste on February 22, 1970.
    • The central section between the Venezia est tollbooth and the junction with the A27 was opened on September 3, 1972. This route connected the two sections of the former A4 motorway that had already been built and now represents the majority of the A57.

    Today's A57

Today's A57 can in turn be divided into these three sections:

    • From the western beginning, where it branches off from the A4, to the tollbooth Venezia ovest est . Here the route has been expanded to six lanes (three lanes in each direction) with hard shoulder . Until 1991 this section was expanded to four lanes.
    • From the Venezia ovest tollbooth to the junction with the A27, the motorway is equipped with additional dynamic lanes . Changing electronic display boards at a distance of approx. 600–700 meters indicate whether the hard shoulder is open as a lane and at what speed the route can be passed.
    • Between the A57 and the Venezia est tollbooth , the A57 has two lanes with hard shoulder. Noise barriers were erected here in 2009 and 2010.

... between the Venezia ovest toll station and the junction with the A27 ...
... and between the A27 and the east node with the A4

    Speed Limit

The new Venezia est tollbooth at the eastern beginning of the A57
    The Venezia ovest toll booth

The speed limit , as on most Italian motorways, is 130 km / h. However, there is a reduction in the speed limit on some sections of the motorway.

    administration

The motorway is managed by the CAV ( Concessioni Autostradali Venete ) between km 0 and km 16.161 . The section between km 16.161 and km 26.661 is managed by the Italian motorway company Autovie Venete, based in Trieste.

Until November 29, 2009, the section that is now administered by the CAV was under the management of the Società delle Autostrade di Venezia e Padova .

    toll

From 1972 to 1991 the toll-free zone on the A4 was between the Venezia ovest toll station and the Venezia est toll station . This toll station was located between the junction with the A27 and the junction via Terraglio . This was demolished on October 1, 2005. In 1991, a new toll booth was built about 9 km further east, as the motorway feeder to Venice Airport was completed that year. The toll-free zone of the A4 thus extended to the Quarto d'Altino junction .

On February 8, 2009, the previous toll booth was closed and the new toll booth at the beginning of the A57 opened about 4 km to the west. This means that the A4 from Milan to Trieste is subject to tolls throughout .

Traffic volume on the A57 and measures

Between the Mirano-Dolo junction and Westkreuz with the A4

The central section of the A57 was opened in 1972 as part of the A4 and had four lanes (two lanes in each direction) with hard shoulder. The route was designed for a traffic volume of 55,000 vehicles per day. After the fall of the Iron Curtain , the volume of traffic rose year after year, far higher than the 1972 plans. After 2000 the number rose to 150,000 (30% of which were trucks and buses). The route of the A4 was thus affected by frequent traffic jams. In addition, air pollution increased in Mestre.

Therefore, on February 28, 2003 to March 1, 2004, Silvio Berlusconi declared a state of emergency on the section of the A4 in the urban area of Mestre. On March 19, 2003, the Commissario delegato per l'emergenza socio economico ambientale della viabilità di Mestre was created to solve the traffic situation by building the Passante di Mestre and installing the T3 system on the A4. This commission was active until November 27, 2009.

    System T3 and MARCO

Scheme and functionality of the T3 system:

In situation 1 , all three lanes can be used.
In situation 2 , the traffic is directed to the 2nd lane, since this lane is closed in the further course of the route.
In situation 3 , only two lanes can be used, the third acts as a hard shoulder
Situation 1, all three lanes can be used

Two systems are currently in operation between the Venezia ovest toll station and the junction with the A27, the MARCO system and the T3-terza corsia dinamica system ( third dynamic lane ).

The MARCO system continuously monitors the traffic along the route using sensors that recognize the number of vehicles and their speed. In addition, the section is monitored by cameras, and those involved in traffic are informed of the current state of the route by changing electronic traffic signs ( variable message signs ). All system data is forwarded to a control center which, if necessary, can initiate changes to the overhead displays on the A57.

The T3 system ( terza corsia dinamica ) has been in operation since April 14, 2003. It was set up as an emergency solution to reduce the traffic chaos on the A57 until the Passante di Mestre opens. Since there was no space to build another lane, the hard shoulder was converted into a dynamic lane. Depending on the volume of traffic, the hard shoulder is either available or used as a lane.

Variable message signs above the lanes indicate whether the respective lane is open and at what speed it can be driven.

The construction of this project was approved at the Conferenza di Servizi del 26/10/1999 . In the first few years, this system eased the flow of traffic and increased the speed of vehicles by approx. 30-35% and reduced the accident rate by 70%.

The T3 system is currently used in Italy on a section of the A14 in Bologna in addition to the A57 .

Mestre bypass ( Passante di Mestre )

    Tangential (A57); A27
    passers-by (A4)
    remaining A4 or A27

The Passante di Mestre is part of the A4, construction of this 32 km long alternative route began in 2004. This Passante di Mestre has six lanes and a hard shoulder. The handover to traffic took place on February 8, 2009. The Passante di Mestre bypasses the urban area of Mestre to the north and thus relieves the route of today's A57. After opening on February 8, 2009, the old section of the A4 was classified as the A57.

Importance of the Passante di Mestre for the A57

Just one month after opening, traffic in the middle section of the A57 has dropped by 20-30%, and in the entire section by 15%. At the Venezia / Mestre toll station, the number of cars fell between February 8th and June 30th, 2009 by a total of 30% compared to the previous year. The decrease in trucks was 55%. With the opening of the passers-by, the number of accidents on this route fell by 71% for cars in the first eight months of 2009. In summer 2009 there were no longer any longer waiting times at the Venezia / Est and Venezia / Mestre tollbooths. There was traffic jam every year due to the tourist traffic to the seaside resorts of the upper Adriatic.
