Marghera is a part of the city of Venice located on the mainland . Marghera and neighboring Mestre are known as the "ugly sisters" of Venice because of their industrial character.

history

At the end of the 19th century, due to its geographical location, it was not possible for Venice to build an industrial center with a suitable port , so an area on the neighboring mainland was considered. In 1917 a quarter of the area of Mestre was expropriated and given to the Società Porto Industriale . The company's goals were to build a commercial port, an industrial port and a new urban district in the hinterland. Soon many residents of Venice and the surrounding area moved to the economically flourishing area. During World War II , Marghera was a target of American bombing, but this did not hamper the development of the industry and the port in the following years.

Current

Today around 30,000 people live in Marghera. The once “gray” part of the city, heavily polluted by the chemical industry, has endeavored in recent years to improve the quality of life of its residents.

The port and industrial area is 1,447 hectares in size, plus 662 hectares of traffic routes such as canals, roads and rail tracks. The shore length of the quays is 12 kilometers. There are berths for ships with a draft of up to 11.5 meters. The cargo handling in 2016 was around 25 million tons. Venice's cruise terminal is not in Marghera, but in Venice's old town, not far from Santa Lucia train station . If necessary, cruise ships also go to Marghera, especially the terminal near Fusina, which is mainly used for ferry traffic. In Marghera there is a shipyard of the shipbuilding company Fincantieri , which builds cruise ships there.
