The Fincantieri - Cantieri Navali Italiani SpA , headquartered in Trieste is the largest European shipbuilding company .
history
Fincantieri was founded in Rome in 1959 as a state holding company, which included eight companies engaged in shipbuilding , ship repairs and the construction of ship engines. In 1984 these companies and the parent holding company were transformed into a single shipbuilding company, continuing the traditions of the old Italian shipyards . The company's headquarters are now in Trieste .
In 2008 Fincantieri acquired the US shipyard Marinette Marine . In January 2013 ten more shipyards were taken over with Vard AS , Fincantieri almost doubled its turnover and number of employees.
In September 2017 Fincantieri took over 50% of the shares in the French STX shipyards. As a result, they were given the old, traditional name Chantiers de l'Atlantique again . The second largest shareholder in Chantiers de l'Atlantique is the French state with 34.34%. In order to guarantee Fincantieri operational control of the company, the French state lends 1% of its stake to Fincantieri, but with a 12-year right of redemption if Fincantieri does not adhere to the agreements made on job security, governance and intellectual property .
Business areas
In recent years Fincantieri has succeeded in meeting the many, mainly East Asian, low-cost providers on the market by concentrating on the segment of large, high-quality cruise ships . Today it is one of the world market leaders in this area. The company is divided into five divisions:
- Cruise ships : Shipyards in Monfalcone ( ⊙ ) , Marghera ( Venice ) and Sestri Ponente ( Genoa )
- Transport and other merchant ships : shipyards in Ancona , Castellammare di Stabia ( Naples ) and Palermo
- Megayachts : Shipyard in Muggiano ( La Spezia )
- Warships : Shipyards in Riva Trigoso ( Genoa ) and Muggiano ( La Spezia )
- Repair and reconstruction : shipyard in Palermo , docks in Trieste and Muggiano ( La Spezia )
The main subsidiaries are VARD (Shipbuilding and Offshore), Orizzonte Sistemi Navali SpA, Isotta Fraschini Motori SpA , Fincantieri Marine Systems North America, Fincantieri Marine Group (including Marinette Marine ) and CETENA.
The subsidiary Vard AS is an international shipbuilding group with ten shipyards in Brazil , Norway , Romania and Vietnam with around 10,000 employees (March 2015). The company was formed in January 2013 from significant parts of the Korean STX Europe and STX OSV.
Together with the Norwegian subsidiary Vard AS, Fincantieri has been the fourth largest shipbuilding company in the world since 2013.
