Giampiero Massolo

Giampiero Massolo (born October 5, 1954 in Warsaw ) is a former Italian diplomat. Since 2016 he has been President of the shipbuilding company Fincantieri .

Life

Massolo graduated from the LUISS University in Rome with a degree in political science in 1976 and then worked for almost two years on the Fiat Group management in Turin . In May 1978 he began his career in the foreign service. After a position in the political department of the Foreign Ministry , he was first secretary in the commercial department of the Italian embassy in Moscow from 1982 to 1985 . From 1985 to 1988 Massolo worked at the Permanent Representation of Italy to the European Community in Brussels . After returning to Rome in 1990 he moved to the office of Prime Minister , where he was foreign policy advisor and then office manager of Prime Ministers Berlusconi and Dini . In June 1996 (shortly after the Prodi I cabinet under Romano Prodi took office ) he returned to the Foreign Ministry, where he became head of the press department and spokesman for the minister.

From 2001 to 2004, Massolo was Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After heading the Department for Multilateral Political Affairs for a few months, he became Head of Cabinet of Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini in November 2004 . From May 2006 to September 2007, Massolo headed the Ministry's Human Resources department. From September 2007 to May 2012 he was Secretary General and thus Head of the Ministry. From April 2008 to December 2009 he also served as the so-called Sherpa of the Prime Minister for the G7 and G20 summits.

In May 2012, Prime Minister Mario Monti appointed Massolo to head the Intelligence Service ( DIS ) in the Prime Minister's Office. After his four-year mandate as intelligence coordinator had expired, Massolo moved to Fincantieri in May 2016. On January 1, 2017, he also became chairman of the think tank Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale (ISPI) in Milan . He is also a member of the Società Dante Alighieri , the Istituto Affari Internazionali , the Aspen Institute Italia , the Trilateral Commission and other bodies. He is the bearer of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic .
