Lamberto Dini (born March 1, 1931 in Florence ) is an Italian politician . From January 1995 to May 1996 he was Prime Minister of the country.

Political career

From 1979 to 1994 Dini was director general of the Italian central bank ( Banca d'Italia ), from May to November 1994 he served as treasury minister in the short-lived Berlusconi I cabinet . In January 1995 Umberto Bossi (whose Lega Nord party could not convey to its regular electorate why this secessionist party was suddenly sitting at the government table in Rome) overthrew Berlusconi's government. Dini was appointed Prime Minister by President Scalfaro and formed a short-lived “technocratic government” (governo tecnico) . From October 19, 1995 to February 16, 1996, Dini was also Minister of Justice .

In 1996 he founded the small, liberal party Rinnovamento Italiano (RI), which received 4.3% of the vote in the general election on April 21, 1996 . Dini then served as Foreign Minister in the Prodi I , D'Alema I , D'Alema II and Amato II cabinets until June 2001 .

In 2001 and 2006 he was elected to the Italian Senate on the list of the moderate rallying party La Margherita - Democrazia è Libertà (with which his party RI merged in 2002) . In 2002/03 he was a member of the European Convention for the Drafting of a Constitution for Europe . In May 2006, the center-right alliance Casa delle Libertà proposed him alongside other politicians as a possible candidate for the office of president ; but he received no significant number of votes. In June 2006 he became chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee .

Dini had been involved in the founding of the center-left party Partito Democratico (PD) since May 2007 , but distanced himself from the project in September and founded his own splinter party in October 2007 under the name Liberal Democratici (LD - identical to the initials Dinis ). This group, which was represented by a member of parliament and three senators, was part of the independent center at the time and withdrew its support from the center-left government of Romano Prodi.

As the Liberal Democratici did not join Berlusconi's new party Popolo della Libertà (PdL) , contrary to initial announcements, Dini left his party to join the PdL on March 29, 2009.
