Gaetano Martino (born November 25, 1900 in Messina , † July 21, 1967 in Rome ) was an Italian politician of the Partito Liberale Italiano and rector of the University of Messina .

Martino, who was a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1948 to 1968 , initially served as Minister of Education in the Scelba government in 1954, but was appointed Foreign Minister only a short time later . He kept this position in the subsequent government of Prime Minister Segni until 1957. In this position he was the initiator of the Messina Conference in 1955 , which took place at his invitation and laid the foundations for the Treaty establishing the European Community two years later. In 1956 he was the first Italian minister to address the UN General Assembly .

In 1960 and 1961 Gaetano Martino was head of the delegation of the Italian parliament to the 15th and 16th UN General Assemblies in New York , and from 1962 to 1964 he was President of the European Parliament . He is the father of Antonio Martino , who was Italian Foreign Minister from 1994 to 1995.
