Pat Cox ( Irish Pádraig Mac to Choiligh , born November 28, 1952 in Dublin ) was President of the European Parliament and Irish MEP from 2002 to 2004 . Most recently he was President of the European Movement International .

Life

Cox studied economics at Trinity College , Dublin. From 1974 to 1982 he was a visiting lecturer in Dublin, then at Limerick University . Between 1982 and 1986 he worked as a journalist for the television program Today Tonight .

His political career began with the establishment of the liberal Progressive Democrats (PD) party in 1985, of which he became General Secretary. In 1989 he was elected to the European Parliament. After the PD first took part in a coalition government in 1992 , he moved into the Irish Parliament and became the financial policy spokesman.

In 1994, Cox returned to the European Parliament and became Deputy Finance Chairman. In 1998 he became group leader of the ELDR (European Liberal, Democratic and Reform Party). In 1999 he ran under Irish majority voting in the European elections and represented the Irish region of Munster . In 2002 he replaced the French Nicole Fontaine as President of Parliament on the basis of a conservative-liberal agreement . His successor as group chairman was the Scot Graham Watson .

On May 20, 2004 he was awarded the Charlemagne Prize in Aachen . The Charlemagne Prize Board of Directors honors his services to the EU expansion and democratization of the European Union.

Pat Cox did not run for the newly elected parliament in June 2004. He was considered a promising successor to the then Commission President Romano Prodi .

From 2006 to November 2011, Cox was President of the European Movement . From June 2010, Pat Cox led the finally successful pro- Lisbon campaign Ireland for Europe as director . He had therefore temporarily given up his office to Charles-Ferdinand Nothomb .

In 2009 he was traded as a candidate for the Irish position in the European Commission . Despite his success in the Irish pro-Lisbon campaign, he did not get a chance and politically focuses on the work as President of the European Movement. In September 2010 he was involved in the founding of the Spinelli Group , which advocates European federalism . In 2011 he was replaced in office by Jo Leinen . Since June 2012, Cox has been monitoring the criminal case against Yulia Tymoshenko in Ukraine on behalf of the European Parliament .
