Enrique Barón Crespo (born March 27, 1944 in Madrid ) is a Spanish politician and EU politician. From June 1989 to January 1992 Barón Crespo was President of the European Parliament .

Life

Studied law and economics at the Universities of Madrid and Paris , practiced as a lawyer.

During the dictatorship of Francisco Franco he founded an (illegal) left-wing socialist party, which he incorporated into the existing Socialist Workers' Party ( PSOE ), which was headed by Felipe González Márquez . After the first democratic election in 1977, he became the economic and financial policy spokesman for the PSOE parliamentary group in the House of Representatives ( Congreso de los Diputados ). From 1982 to 1985 he was Minister for Transport, Communication and Tourism in the first government of Felipe González .

European Parliament

In 1985 Barón resigned as a minister and became a member of the European Parliament in 1986 after Spain joined the European Union (EU) or what was then the European Community (EC). As early as 1987 he ran for the office of President of the European Parliament, but was defeated after three ballots with only five votes to his British opponent Charles Henry Plumb, Baron Plumb . On July 25, 1989, he was elected the youngest President of the European Parliament in the first ballot. As is customary in the European Parliament, he resigned this post after two and a half years in office.

Subsequently, Enrique Barón held other offices within the European Parliament, for example he was Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee from 1992 to 1994 and Chairman of the Socialist Group from 1999 to 2004. From 2004 to 2009 he was Chairman of the Committee on International Trade . By the European Parliament he was appointed as one of its three representatives to the intergovernmental conference delegates in 2007 that the Lisbon Treaty should formulate.

He holds numerous honorary positions. So he is u. a. Advisory board member of the Global Panel Foundation .
