Emilio Colombo (born April 11, 1920 in Potenza , † June 24, 2013 in Rome ) was an Italian politician and diplomat . He was Italian Prime Minister from 1970 to 1972 .

Life

Emilio Colombo was a member of the Democrazia Cristiana . His political career began in 1946 when he was a member of the Constituent Assembly. From 1948 he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies .

From 1963 to 1970, Colombo was Minister of the Treasury, before taking over the post of Prime Minister in 1970. From 1974 to 1976 he was again Minister of the Treasury.

In 1977 he was elected President of the European Parliament and held this office until 1979. Colombo was also Italian Foreign Minister from 1980 to 1983 and 1992 to 1993. In 1993 he became chairman of the Christian Democratic International .

Emilio Colombo died in Rome on June 24, 2013 at the age of 93.

Honors

In 1979 Colombo received the International Charlemagne Prize of the city of Aachen . In 2003 he was appointed Senator for life by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi .
