Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa
Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa (born July 23, 1940 in Belluno , Veneto , † December 18, 2010 in Rome ) was an Italian banker and economist . From May 2006 to May 2008 he was Minister of Economics and Finance in the government of Romano Prodi .
biography
Padoa-Schioppa was the son of Fabio Padoa-Schioppa , a former CEO of Generali Insurance . After graduating from high school in Trieste , he studied at the Luigi Bocconi University of Economics in Milan and became an economist in 1966. In 1970 he completed his studies with a master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge (Massachusetts) . He started his career at C & A Brenninkmeyer and in 1968 he was employed by the research department of the Italian central bank Banca d'Italia .
From 1979 to 1983 he was Director General for Economy and Finance of the European Community . Also since 1979 he was a member of the Group of Thirty , a private lobbying organization for the financial industry. Between 1984 and 1997 he was Deputy General Manager of Banca d'Italia. From 1997 to 1998 he was chairman of the Italian stock exchange supervisory authority CONSOB .
Between 1999 and 2005 he was a member of the six-member Executive Board of the European Central Bank . On May 17, 2006, he was appointed as the independent Minister of Economics and Finance by Prime Minister Romano Prodi in the second government formed by the latter and remained until it was voted out in 2008. Since 2010 he has been a member of the supervisory board of the Italian car manufacturer Fiat and was an advisor on questions business, banking and debt management volunteer work for the Greek government. In 2009 he was named chairman of the private financial advisory firm Promontory Financial Group for Europe.
He was married to the economist Fiorella Kostoris and had three children. His last partner was the journalist and writer Barbara Spinelli , daughter of Altiero Spinelli . In 2010 he was involved in founding the Spinelli Group , which advocates European federalism .
He died of heart failure in Rome on the evening of December 18, 2010.
