Ottaviano Del Turco (born November 7, 1944 in Collelongo , Abruzzo ) is an Italian politician .

Life

Del Turco began his public career as a trade union official and later held leading positions within the Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI) under General Secretary Bettino Craxi until the PSI lost its influence in the wake of a bribery scandal between 1992 and 1994. However, as a representative of the center-left parties, he remained a member of the Camera dei Deputati (Chamber of Deputies) and was chairman of the anti- mafia committee there from 1996 to 2000 .

In April 2000, Prime Minister Giuliano Amato appointed him finance minister in his cabinet. He held this office until the end of Amato's tenure in June 2001. In this position, he publicly took over a check for 25 billion lire in 2000 from Luciano Pavarotti , who has been investigated for tax evasion since 1996. Euros) to pay off their tax debts.

In the European elections in 2004 he was elected as a representative of the Socialisti Democratici Italiani as a member of the European Parliament .

In April 2005, however, he resigned his parliamentary mandate after he had previously been elected President of the Abruzzo Region. He was arrested on June 14, 2008 , on charges of corruption in the region's public health sector, on suspicion of taking bribes amounting to around 6 million euros . Three days after his arrest, he resigned as Regional President of Abruzzo on July 17, 2008.
