Giovanni Goria

Giovanni Giuseppe Goria (born July 30, 1943 in Asti ; † May 21, 1994 ibid) was an Italian politician of the Democrazia Cristiana .

Political career

Goria became a member of the DC in 1960 and elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1976 . From June 1981 to June 1982 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Budget and from December 1982 to July 1987 he was Treasury Secretary under various governments.

After the parliamentary elections in 1987, Giovanni Goria was named Italy's youngest Prime Minister on July 28, 1987 . It was only with Matteo Renzi in 2014 that an even younger politician became head of the Italian government.

Giovanni Goria resigned on March 11, 1988 when Parliament refused to approve his cabinet's budget following budget disputes. He had previously submitted his resignation twice when his five-party coalition threatened to collapse; Both times, however, President Francesco Cossiga had refused the resignation .

He subsequently held the post of Minister of Agriculture under Giulio Andreotti and that of Finance Minister under Giuliano Amato , before finally retiring from politics in 1993 as part of a major corruption affair that affected many famous figures in his party. He died of lung cancer in his hometown of Asti before his bribery case could be completed .
