Vittorio Grilli

Vittorio Umberto Grilli (born May 19, 1957 in Milan ) is an Italian economist . Among other things, he has worked as a university lecturer , as a bank manager and as a ministerial official. From July 2012 to April 2013 he was the Minister of Economy and Finance of Italy .

Career

Vittorio Grilli studied at the Luigi Bocconi University of Economics in Milan. After graduating, he earned a Masters and then a Ph.D. in the United States. in Economics from the University of Rochester , New York . In the US, he taught from 1986 to 1990 at the Yale University then from 1990 to 1994 England at Birkbeck College of the University of London .

In 1993 he was appointed to an advisory board of the Italian Ministry of the Treasury as a financial expert. Between 1994 and 2000 he headed the Department of Economic and Financial Analysis and Privatization in the Ministry of the Treasury, and from 1996 to 1997 the Department of Asset and Debt Management . This was followed by a position as Managing Director of Credit Suisse First Boston in London.

After the new Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance was created through a merger in 2001, Grilli took over the budget department there in 2002 ( Ragioneria Generale dello Stato ). From 2005 to 2011, he was under the governments of Silvio Berlusconi and Romano Prodi at the head of the Department of Treasury Affairs ( Dipartimento del Tesoro , Eng. Treasury ). He also led a working group that prepares the Ecofin meetings of EU finance ministers.

When Mario Monti was appointed Prime Minister and Minister of Economics and Finance on November 16, 2011 , Vittorio Grilli took over as deputy minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance. On July 11, 2012, Monti handed over the management of the ministry to Vittorio Grilli, who as a minister also became a full member of the cabinet . Grilli kept the ministerial office until April 28, 2013, when he handed it over to Fabrizio Saccomanni .

Vittorio Grilli has been a member of management or supervisory bodies of the following companies, institutes or organizations: Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia , Cassa Depositi e Prestiti , Istituto Nazionale di Genetica Molecolare , Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna , Enel , Alitalia , Artigiancasse , CONSAP, CONSIP, Wind Telecomunicazioni , European Investment Bank , ISPE, ISAE, Arcus , Commissione di Garanzia per l'Informazione Statistica .

Vittorio Grilli is a member of the business think tank BRUEGEL and the Aspen Institute Italia .
